The Freilich Project is pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 round of the Herbert and Valmae Freilich Annual Early Career Research Small Grant. We received twenty two applications for the $5000 grants to assist research into the causes, the histories and the effects of ethnic, cultural, religious and sexual bigotry and animosity.

We received a high number of quality applications, and the committee are pleased to fund the following early career scholars and their projects:

• Dr Jennifer Hamilton, Dr Christina Kenny, and Dr Felicity Joseph (University of New England) for their project, “Towards Hetero-optimism: Heteropessimism, Homophobia and Inclusive Sexuality Studies Today”.
• Dr Andonis Piperoglou (Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research, Griffith University) for his project, From ‘Dagoes’ to ‘Wogs’: a transnational history of racial slurs.
• Dr Yu Tao (Chinese Studies, The University of Western Australia) for his project, Racial discrimination against and by Immobile Temporary Migrants: Chinese international students in Western Australian universities amid the COVID-19 global pandemic.
• Dr Michael Thai (School of Psychology, The University of Queensland) for his project, An investigation of the motivated prejudice behind the “perpetual foreigner syndrome”.

Thank you to everyone who submitted applications. Next year's round of grants will be advertised in August 2021 for projects commencing in January 2022.
